Not All Eye Exams are the Same

Be Spectacled offers both routine and medical eye exams to our patients, as well as urgent eye care. We explain a little about each area below.

See our Kids Eye Health page for pediatric eye care details.

Routine Eye Exams

A routine exam is what most folks think of when they imagine visiting an optometrist.

What does a routine eye exam include?

A routine eye exam includes:

  • Measurement of your visual acuity, to see if eyeglasses or contacts could improve your vision

  • Diagnosis and treatment of non-medical complaints like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia (loss of focusing)

  • An evaluation of your general eye health

When should you get a routine eye exam?

We recommend having your child’s vision checked before they enter school, and annually after that.

For healthy adults, we recommend a complete eye exam annually. If you have certain medical conditions, we may need to see you more often for medical eye care (see below).

Medical Eye Care

A medical exam includes diagnosis and treatment for eye diseases. You may need medical eye care if:

  • Your comprehensive eye exam shows you have or are at risk for eye disease, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, corneal disease, etc.

  • You have diabetes or another disease that indicates a high-risk factor for eye disease

  • You take certain medications that can have side-effects on your eye health

Urgent Eye Care

If you are experiencing vision problems, pain or discomfort, we can help. We will evaluate your case, provide necessary related exams, and treat your condition and/or refer you for further care.

Referral Network

In certain cases, Be Spectacled will refer you to another local eye care specialist. We have strong, healthy relationships with a wide network of opthamologists, optometrists, and other physicians who provide fantastic patient care.
